News and Current Affairs

Categories Criteria
1 Best News Daily news programme which demonstrates excellence in news gathering and presentation. Entrants are required to submit two programme broadcasts, one from a date of their choice within the awards eligibility period, the second from the date identified by the Chair of Judges as   Thursday 1 October 2009.
2 Best News or Current Affairs Presenter Excellence in live presenting and interviewing with integrity and authority on a daily/weekly basis.
NB: Morning television programmes may enter a television segment of no more than 20 minutes; consumer programmes should choose a news and current affairs segment or a general television programme, not both.
3 TV Journalist of the Year Excellence in journalism in either news or current affairs. Winners in category 4, 5,  6 and 8 are eligible for consideration for this award.
4 Best News Reporting Excellence in news reporting by demonstrating investigative skills, story telling, integrity and ability to present effectively. Entries may be two single news reports, or no more than three reports on the same running story.
5 Best Current Affairs Reporting for a weekly programme or one-off current affairs special

Excellence in the genre including story-telling, interviewing, research, presentation and public impact. Entries can be in the name of the reporter and producer with a maximum of two stories per reporter.

6 Best Current Affairs Reporting for a daily programme Excellence in analysing news events, research, newsworthiness, story-telling and presentation. Entries can be in the name of the reporter and producer, and can reflect treatment of a single story OR a story with a number of related elements, the duration of which shall be no more than 12 minutes in total. Entries may be two reports per reporter, or per reporter and producer.
7 Best Current Affairs Series A daily/weekly series which demonstrates excellence in current affairs reporting, story telling and research.
8 Investigation of the Year A news/current affairs story which significantly expands an issue of public interest. Judges will seek excellence in reporting, interviewing, research and presentation. Entries can be in the name of the reporter, or reporter and producer. This entry can consist of one or two reports on the same subject to allow for follow-ups to the original story.
9 Best News Camera* Excellence in camera work which makes a clear difference to the presentation and story-telling of up to three individual reports.
10 Best Current Affairs Camera* Excellence in camerawork which makes a clear difference to the presentation and story-telling of a single report.
11 Best News Editing* Excellence in editing which shows technical skills and ability to combine formats such as graphics in a way which makes a clear difference to the presentation and story-telling of up to three individual news reports.
12 Best Current Affairs Editing* Excellence in editing which shows technical skills and ability to combine formats such as graphics in a way which makes a clear difference to the presentation and story-telling of a single current affairs report.

General Television

Categories Criteria
13 Best Drama Programme Awarded to the producer of a one-off drama programme, drama series or serial
e.g. Shortland Street, Outrageous Fortune.
14 Best Comedy Programme OR Comedy Series Awarded to the producer of a one-off comedy programme, comedy series or serial
e.g. Bro’ Town, Eating Media Lunch, Mysterious Planet
15 Best Maori Language Programme Awarded to the producer of the best one-off programme or series episode which contributes to the revitalisation of Te Reo Maori and in which the spoken Maori language content is 50% or more.
16 Best Children’s/Youth Programme Awarded to the producer of the best one-off programme or series episode aimed at young audience e.g. Holly’s Heroes, Let’s Get Inventin’, Pacific Beat Street.
17 Best Information/Lifestyle Programme Awarded to the producer of the best one-off programme or episode of a series which aims to inform, including travel, design, consumer, cooking and leisure activities e.g. Fair Go, What’s Really in Our Food?
18 Best Entertainment Programme Awarded to the best one-off programme or episode of a series which aims to entertain - includes variety, game shows, quiz shows or music specials
e.g. Jono’s New Show, Dancing With the Stars
19 Best Sports Broadcast Awarded to the producer of the best sports broadcast, including a live or delayed sports event, one-off sports programme or series episode
e.g. Hamilton V8s, International Netball series but excludes magazine programmes such as Code.
20 Best Observational Reality Series Awarded to the producer of the best series which tells stories about real people in real situations - not situations constructed or manipulated to realise a format. i.e. non-prescripted ‘fly-on-the-wall’ observational documentaries
e.g. Border Patrol and Hitched.
21 Best Constructed Reality Series Awarded to the producer of the best non-fiction series in which the premise, circumstances or situations are constructed or manipulated for the purpose of realising the format (with or without a competition structure)
e.g. MasterChef, The Apprentice, Missing Pieces.
22 Best Performance by an Actress Awarded to the actress for outstanding performance in a drama or comedy programme or series episode.
23 Best Performance by a Supporting Actress Awarded to the supporting actress for outstanding performance in a drama or comedy programme or series episode.
24 Best Performance by an Actor Awarded to the actor for outstanding performance in a drama or comedy programme or series episode.
25 Best Performance by a Supporting Actor Awarded to the supporting actor for outstanding performance in a drama or comedy programme or series episode.
26 Best Presenter - Entertainment/Factual Awarded to a presenter of either a one-off factual or entertainment programme or series (excluding news and current affairs presenters).
27 Best Script - Drama/Comedy Awarded to the writer/s of the best drama or comedy script for a one-off series or serial.
28 Best Director - Drama/Comedy Awarded to the director for outstanding achievement in a one-off drama or comedy programme or series episode.
29 Best Director - Entertainment/Factual Awarded to the director for outstanding achievement in a one-off factual or entertainment programme or series episode.
30 Best Multi Camera Direction* Awarded to the director for outstanding achievement in multi-camera direction of a “live” or recorded “as live” programme.
31 Best Cinematography Drama/Comedy* Awarded for outstanding achievement in cinematography in a one-off drama or comedy programme or series episode.
32 Best Editing  Drama/Comedy* Awarded for outstanding achievement in editing in a one-off drama or comedy programme or series episode.
33 Best Original Music* Awarded to the composer/s of the best original score specifically composed for the submitted programme.
34 Best Sound Design* Awarded for outstanding achievement in sound design for a programme or series episode, excluding musical composition.

Best Production Design*

Awarded to the production designer for outstanding achievement in production design.
36 Best Contribution to Design* Awarded to an individual for outstanding contribution to makeup, costume or special effects for a programme or series episode.

Documentary

Categories Criteria
37 Best Popular Documentary OR Documentary Series Awarded to the producer of the best one-off documentary or single episode of a "mainstream" documentary aiming to examine a particular subject in depth.
38 Best Arts/Festival/Feature Documentary

Awarded to the producer of the best one-off arts, festival or feature documentary screened in the cinema or on television e.g. Rain of the Children, The Nuclear Comeback.

39 Best Director Documentary Awarded to the director for outstanding achievement in a one-off documentary or single episode of a documentary or factual series.
40 Best Cinematography Documentary/Factual* Awarded for outstanding achievement in cinematography in a one-off documentary or single episode of a documentary or factual series.
41 Best Editing  Documentary/Factual* Awarded for outstanding achievement in editing in a one-off documentary or single episode of a documentary or factual series.

Film

42 Best Feature Film Awarded to the producer of the best feature film.
43 Outstanding Feature Film Debut Awarded to a team or individual writer, director, producer with outstanding achievement in their first feature film.
44 Best Director in a Feature Film Awarded to the director for outstanding achievement in directing a feature film.
45 Best Lead Actor in a Feature Film Awarded to the actor for outstanding performance in a leading role in a feature film.
46 Best Lead Actress in a Feature Film Awarded to the actress for outstanding performance in a leading role in a feature film.
47 Best Supporting Actor in a Feature Film Awarded to the actor for outstanding performance in a supporting role in a feature film.
48 Best Supporting Actress in a Feature Film Awarded to the actress for outstanding performance in a supporting role in a feature film.
49 Best Screenplay for a Feature Film Awarded to the writer/s of the best screenplay for a feature film.
50 Best Cinematography in a Feature Film* Awarded for outstanding achievement in cinematography in a feature film.
51 Best Editing in a Feature Film* Awarded for outstanding achievement in editing in a feature film.
52 Best Original Music in a Feature Film* Awarded to the composer/s for outstanding achievement of a film score in a feature film.
53 Best Sound in a Feature Film* Awarded to a team or individual for outstanding achievement in sound in a feature film.
54 Best Production Design in a Feature Film* Awarded for outstanding achievement in production design in a feature film.
55 Best Costume Design in a Feature Film* Awarded for outstanding achievement in costume design in a feature film.
56 Best Make-Up Design in a Feature Film* Awarded for outstanding achievement in make-up design in a feature film.
57 Best Visual Effects in a Feature Film* Awarded to the individual or team making the best visual FX contribution to a feature film.
58 Best Short Film Awarded to the director of the best short film.
59 Best Performance in a Short Film* Awarded to the actor or actress for outstanding performance in a short film.
60 Best Screenplay for a Short Film* Awarded to the writer/s of the best screenplay for a short film.
61 Outstanding Technical Contribution to a Short Film* Awarded for outstanding technical contribution to a short film.
